Canang Sari
A selfless and dedicated act. The Canang Sari are given to the gods every morning by the Hindu Balinese as a form of thanking for balance and peace in our world that is renewed each day.
You come across these offering baskets all over the island. In small temples, in the houses, in the shops, in large Balinese temples, but also on the sidewalk, in the taxi or even on the scooters.
The small offerings are the result of a very long, hand-made process: Balinese women make the baskets by hand from woven palm tree leaves. The baskets are filled with rice, flowers, banana, sweets and even money. Even the colors and the arrangement of the flowers in the basket have a meaning. They dip a jepun flower in holy water to sprinkle the canang in a symbolic fusion of the four elements. The ritual ends with a little prayer spoken as smoke from burning incense carries the essence of the offering to the gods.
There is so much dedication and beauty in Bali - I am counting the days to travel back to this truly inspiring island!
